Unfortunately the Arvika festival started without me this year, but that's ok since I spent the weekend in Brussels. Even though it's used as a curse in Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Belgium can be a nice place in the summertime. But my arrival was less than graceful, since I hit my head on the airport bus. Hard. It bled a lot in the beginning, and one guy on the bus asked if I had been shot.

Shantaram was one of the most hyped books a few years back. It tells the tale of former bank robber Gregory David Roberts, who escapes from a high-security prison in Australia. After a while he arrives in Mumbai and fall in love with the city. The whopping 900 pages initially describes his early encounters with the locals at infamous bar Leopold and how he fall in love with a mysterious woman at first sight.

The spell of sports

The largest sports event of 2010 is without any doubt the Soccer World Championship in South Africa. Events like these make the world grind to a stop when it's getting close to kickoff, as people are spellbound at the arena, at a pub or in the sofa. The audience stare at 22 men running around on a field of grass, chasing a round object made from the skin of an animal.

Google adds more caffeine

Google has just updated their indexing machine, calling the new system Caffeine. This has been in the works since last summer. To honor its name, the index is refreshed much faster than before. Or should I say more often, since the word fast is a bit relative when it comes to Google.

I've had the good fortune to try the new iPad on two separate occasions during the past week. One of these locations was a rooftop in Madrid, but I'll put the stunning settings aside and mention the ups and downs of this hyped product in an almost objective way.

Back in the land of tapas

So I am back in Spain, the land of tapas. Currently staying with a friend here in Madrid who has an amazing roof terrace outside his apartment, where we've spent long evenings with great tapas and cold drinks. However, as this is my 4th visit to the country and 3rd to Madrid, it feels great to have explored the surroundings a bit more than last time.

Getting lost in Yazd

So here I am in Yazd, an ancient desert city in Iran. I arrived a few days ago coming by bus from Esfahan, a magnificient modern city. The contrast is enormous, since the old town of Yazd mostly consists of sundried mud bricks. But I must confess that the ice cream I found today was the best so far in Iran, while Esfahan had the best coffee.

After arriving in Tehran a few days back I discovered that Facebook, Twitter and other fun sites are thoroughly blocked, just as suspected. So I had a coffee and took the next flight to Shiraz, the lovely city in the south of Iran, on a holy quest to find the perfect kebab.

Server control IDs in ASP.NET 4

It's been known for a while that the new version of ASP.NET will take care of an old problem, the id mangling of server controls. In short, your carefully selected id could be rewritten into something like "ctl00_MainContent_" before rendered to the client. Since this is one of the most annoying issues for several reasons, the change is very welcome by us markup-aware developers. All three of us.

One of the things I love about the web is the crazy stuff that pops up all the time. The latest buzz is Chatroulette where you can have a video chat with random people. The site was founded four months ago by a 17 year old Russian. It started with 300 users in December and today it is being used by over 1,5 million people each day.
